20 Years of Adventure, Courage & Camaraderie!

The Merrell Spring Challenge isn’t just any event, it’s the original women’s adventure race in the world. For two decades it has inspired, empowered, and challenged thousands of women, and it remains the biggest and most authentic adventure race of its kind, proudly led by world champion adventure racer Nathan Fa’avae and his wife Jodie.

For our 20th Anniversary, we’re taking it back to where it all began in Hanmer Springs, the birthplace of the very first Spring Challenge in 2007.

What is the Spring Challenge?
It’s one of New Zealand’s crown jewels of adventure racing. Teams of three women navigate through spectacular landscapes, tackling disciplines such as rafting, kayaking, mountain biking, hiking, and orienteering. Every course is brand new, designed to be unique and unforgettable.

The Challenge Levels
There are three categories: 3, 6, and 9-hour events. These aren’t time limits, but winning times, so while some racers may fly through in record speed, others will be out adventuring all day. Most finish in daylight, but for some of the 9-hour teams, the journey continues into the night under the stars.

For Everyone, Everywhere
From first-time adventurers to the world’s elite, the Spring Challenge embraces all abilities. For many, it’s less about racing others and more about the personal journey: training with teammates, learning new skills, working towards a goal, and discovering a deeper strength within. The rewards go far beyond the finish line, confidence, empowerment, and lifelong friendships.

Why it’s Special
At the heart of the Spring Challenge is exploration. Navigation means no course is ever repeated, so every year is fresh. Each race opens the door to new landscapes and hidden gems of Aotearoa, often places participants might never have discovered otherwise.

For 20 years, the Merrell Spring Challenge has done more than run a race. It has changed lives, built communities, and created memories that last a lifetime. Hanmer Springs 2026 is going to be one for the history books, and we can’t wait to celebrate it with you!
